Teen Women in Action

Teen Women in Action (TWA) is an after school program that builds and trains teen women leaders in DC schools each year through self advocacy, leadership development, and project implementation. TWA provides interactive trainings, peer counseling, and individual support to students in DC public schools. TWA is currently offered to teen women at Anacostia, Cardozo, Dunbar, and Wilson Senior High Schools.

TWA meets each week from 3:30 - 6:15 pm and features a wide range of activities including games, group discussions, peer support circles, role-plays, field trips, guest speakers, and more. Trainings cover such topics as communication, problem solving, goal setting, self esteem, relationships, teen pregnancy, safer sex, HIV/AIDS, nutrition, body image, gender, oppression, and conflict resolution. The TWA curriculum is divided into the following modules:

  • Self Advocacy

  • Reproductive Health

  • Mental and Physical Health

  • Academic Enrichment

  • Project Development

How to Join TWA

Recruitment for TWA takes place each year in the fall at participating schools. Female students in grades 9 – 12 at Anacostia, Cardozo, Dunbar, and Wilson High Schools are encouraged to apply. Participants can receive up to 75 hours of community service hours as well as a twice a year stipend. After completing TWA teens have the chance to become paid teen staff members working on one of our Teen-Led Projects.
